Entering the Evergreen State Fair? A Few Tips, from the Equine Newsletter, August 1999
Bringing home the blue ribbon is every animal lover’s dream and for many it is a reality. But the coveted prize doesn’t come without some careful planning, training and preparation. All animals will be inspected by an Evergreen State Fair veterinarian, and must be free from any clinical indications of contagious infectious diseases, and external parasites (lice, ticks). From a veterinarian’s perspective, we suggest: Cattle should be up-to-date on vaccinations and worming. Anything four months or older, vaccinate with a respiratory vaccine – BVD, IBR, P13, lepto, and haemophilus.

It is also time to be trimming warts, applying antifungal to ringworm, and checking for mange or lice. These suggestions apply to all animals entering competition at the fair such as pigs, goats, sheep and llamas.

If you are entering the equine category, be sure that your horse’s vaccinations are up-to-date and that it has been dewormed. It is also helpful if your horse is accustomed to having its temperature taken. We recommend vaccinating with tetanus, influenza, rhino, and encephalitis four to six weeks prior to the fair. You may wish to add strangles or Potomac Horse Fever.

Be prepared! It will save time and frustration at fair time for you and everyone else.
